Indigenous Alumni

The ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵIndigenous Alumni Network was established by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander alumni from the 80s and early 90s. Our objective is to enable Indigenous students and alumni to engage and remain connected with each other and ANU. We also aim to celebrate the University's achievements in Indigenous education.

Inaugural Patrons of the Network include:

  • Local Ngambri Elder, Mrs Matilda House, who opened the Tjabal Centre in 1989
  • Ms Anne Martin, current Director of the Tjabal Centre
  • Emeritus Professor Isabel McBryde, who was instrumental in encouraging the University's enrolment of Indigenous students and supporting development of an Indigenous Student Centre, which is now the Tjabal Centre
  • Professor Marcia Langton, first Indigenous Honours graduate in Anthropology at ANU

The ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵIndigenous Alumni Network Committee has been actively working over the last few years to build a community of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander alumni to support each other, current and future students, and the Tjabal Centre.

Want to be part of the Network?

If you have identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander with ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵas a student, then you are automatically part of the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵIndigenous Alumni Network. If you are unsure of whether you have identified, would like to identify, or need to update your contact details, please email the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵAlumni Relations team.

If you would like to be a part of the committee or volunteer ad hoc at events, take charge of meaningful projects at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵor explore other opportunities to be involved in this space or contact the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵAlumni Relations team.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵReconciliation Action Plan

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵis committed to fostering the Network through their draft Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP sets out the University's key priorities and actions for its contribution toward Reconciliation. The ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵIndigenous Alumni Network has been invited to participate as a member of the RAP Committee. This is a great opportunity for Indigenous alumni to shape the University and contribute to the next generation of students by sharing insights from your experience at ANU.

If you would like to share your thoughts on the draft RAP, please get in touch with Frank Gafa, the Chair of the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵIndigenous Alumni Network, by emailing the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵAlumni Relations team.
